Comparing poems of the past with free verse, Walt Whitman likened the measures of the past to the columns of a classic temple: The rhythms were predetermined and fixed. While modern poetry is also metrical, its rhythms are more like the waves hitting the shore, dictated by the internal pressures of the sea.

What interests me when depicting water is the play of cross currents; the layering of lines, and planes that form an unending variety of rhythms defined by movement and color.
